Our next Filmpool member to be profiled is filmmaker Sophie Kokott, currently the executive director of Saskatoon’s Floor Thirteen Films. Over the years, Sophie has had plenty of experience wearing multiple hats, most recently her work with her sister, Hayley, on their web series Pieces, whose second season premiered this October. Some of Sophie’s other recent works include the feature film Audacity, on which Sophie was 1st Assistant Director, as well as directing and editing through another Saskatoon based media company, NOM. With all of these collaborations, it’s no surprise that Sophie’s passion for collaborating with other filmmakers shines through in her work. “I love working with other up-and-coming creative to develop the best project,” Sophie says, “I would not be able to make films without a great crew working alongside myself.”
Working on so many different projects requires a lot of support from the local industry, and Sophie feels that she has found just that within the Filmpool. Of her membership with the Filmpool, Sophie says that it has helped in her independent filmmaking not only through equipment rentals and the ability to improve production quality, but also through the opportunity to connect with like-minded people. Even though Sophie’s work flow never seems to slow down, she does find certain aspects of the industry challenging.
“It is difficult to get people to see the work you put so much effort and time into,” Sophie says of marketing her work. “I make films because I love it, but it is even better when people see the work!” With everything she has on the go, Sophie’s marketing efforts are sure to be worth the while. Currently, Sophie is in the early stages of production for the third season of Pieces.
